Facial masks: General characteristics and correct use

Abstract

The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic is caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome SARS-CoV-2. This pathogen has spread rapidly throughout the world, causing large numbers of deaths and significant social and economic impacts. Individual behavior is crucial to minimize virus transmission; Social distancing, proper hand washing and the use of a mask and nose are our best allies to take care of ourselves and others. This review will present the basic concepts and the different characteristics of three types of face masks, including the so-called “hygienic masks” of non-approved manufacture. It seeks to inform about its use and preparation in such a way as to minimize the effects of the pandemic.
